After a day of intense fighting, the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh accepted a proposal by Russian peacekeepers for a ceasefire from 13:00 on 20 September. Azerbaijan had launched a military operation the day before, which Baku called "anti-terrorist".

Under the agreement, the units of the Karabakh Defence Army will be disarmed and disbanded. Talks on the "reintegration" of the region will be held in Yevlakh.

Karabakh's ombudsman reported dozens of dead, including civilians and children. Thousands of people are sheltering in basements and at the Russian peacekeepers' base. Several Russian servicemen were also killed.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Armenia had not taken part in drafting the agreement and that there were no Armenian troops in Karabakh. He also said the government was ready to receive the people of Karabakh.
