Israel and Hamas accepted the first phase of Trump's plan
A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas has taken effect in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army has begun pulling back troops to agreed positions.
The deal is the first phase of US President Donald Trump's 20-point plan. It provides for the release of all living Israeli hostages within 72 hours in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners.
Negotiations mediated by the US, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey took place in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have begun returning to the north of the strip.
World leaders welcomed the agreement. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for unhindered access for humanitarian aid.
