The 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change has opened in Baku. It is chaired by Azerbaijan's Ecology Minister Mukhtar Babayev.

The main task of the conference is to agree on a new target for climate finance that developed countries should provide to developing ones.

A number of European leaders did not travel to Baku. Human rights defenders drew attention to the situation of political prisoners in Azerbaijan.

In 2023 Yerevan supported Baku's bid to host COP29 as part of confidence-building arrangements.
