Armenian telecommunications provider Fnet and Chinese technology company Huawei announced an agreement for a major network upgrade in Yerevan on November 2, 2026. The transition to advanced XGS-PON technology will allow the local operator to move away from aging infrastructure and provide its subscribers with symmetrical internet speeds of up to 10 Gbps.

The implementation of the new standard will provide a fourfold increase in download capacity and an eightfold increase in upload capacity compared to the current GPON technology. According to Fnet representatives, this will increase broadband speeds for end-users by five times. The company plans to scale gigabit data plans across its entire coverage area, which includes the capital and five regions of the country.

Fnet CEO Gevorg Yengibaryan emphasized that the Chinese partner was selected following a strict competitive tender. According to him, when choosing an equipment supplier, the company evaluated not only the initial cost but also performance, reliability, and opportunities for further network evolution.

"XGS-PON is not just about faster speeds. It is about creating a better, more reliable, and more future-ready experience for our customers. Together, Huawei and Fnet are building the future of broadband connectivity in Armenia," Yengibaryan stated.

Fnet was founded in 2009 by Gevorg Yengibaryan and Andranik Elmasyan as the MY TV cable television network and rebranded in 2017. Today, the provider serves subscribers from the Shirak region in the north to Vayots Dzor in the south, and since 2024, it has been selling bundled convergent packages with Armenia's leading mobile operator, Viva.

The phased migration of the network to Huawei equipment is closely aligned with the government's Digital Agenda 2030 program. The state strategy prioritizes broadband expansion for the integration of artificial intelligence and the digitalization of public services. The implementation of these plans is expected to contribute to an annual economic growth of 6% and the creation of 125,000 new jobs.
