Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer and has had the lower lobe of his right lung successfully removed, the Vatican said in a medical bulletin.
The 71-year-old pope underwent a 90-minute operation at Rome's Gemelli hospital, after which he was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma.
"The operation was successful and there were no complications. After the operation the pope woke normally and, after a brief period of observation, returned to his room," the Vatican said.
The tumour was detected during routine check-ups. The pontiff is expected to stay in hospital for about a week.
