Tisza may secure a constitutional majority
Viktor Orbán's 16 years in power are over. In Hungary's parliamentary election the Tisza party, led by 45-year-old Péter Magyar, a former insider of the ruling party, won a convincing victory.
According to preliminary results, with more than 98% of the vote counted, Tisza is set to win 138 seats in parliament, Orbán's Fidesz 55 and the far-right Our Homeland six.
"We did it. Together we overthrew the Hungarian regime," Magyar told a rally on the Danube embankment opposite the parliament building.
The opposition's victory may change Budapest's position within the European Union, where Orbán's government often blocked decisions, including on aid to Ukraine.
