Iran's Assembly of Experts has chosen Mojtaba Khamenei as the country's new Supreme Leader. He is the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in early March in US-Israeli strikes.

A statement read on state television said the assembly had not stopped working despite wartime conditions and strikes on the offices of its secretariat.

Mojtaba Khamenei is 56. He was born in 1969 in Mashhad and is the second of the late ayatollah's six children. In his youth he took part in the Iran-Iraq war.

The election of the son of the previous leader is unprecedented for the Islamic Republic. Analysts expect the new leader to continue a hard line towards the US and Israel.
