The new Chief Executive of the Rugby Football League (RFL), Ian Lenagan, has supported a proposal for 30 million pounds in government funding for a five-year social project in the north of the country. As reported by BBC Sport, former national team rugby player John Wilkinson approached the UK leadership with this initiative.

Wilkinson made a direct appeal to UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy. The former athlete suggested adopting the experience of Australia, which allocated about 130 million pounds for the long-term development of rugby league and local communities in Oceania. In his opinion, a partnership between the British government, RFL clubs, and local authorities will allow for effective support of the most economically vulnerable areas in the north of England.

Ian Lenagan, who took office as head of the organization on October 1, emphasized the practical benefits of the project. He noted that the government will not have to build new facilities from scratch: rugby league clubs have been operating in depressed towns for decades, and residents and their families are accustomed to relying on existing sports organizations in their daily lives.

Crisis after World Cup exit

The discussion about investments coincided with a severe crisis for the national team. At the World Cup, the English men's and women's teams finished their campaigns at the group stage for the first time in history, failing to reach the semi-finals. In response to the failure, the RFL leadership launched a consultation program with sports veterans called 'One Game, One England,' hoping to review the domestic calendar and reform player development, starting from the youth level.
