Latvia has called an emergency UN Security Council meeting due to strikes on Ukraine
Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže announced the meeting's convocation following the death of 26 people in a strike on a humanitarian aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha.
Latvian authorities have initiated the convocation of an emergency UN Security Council meeting in connection with a series of recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory, which resulted in the deaths of at least 26 people. This foreign policy move by the Baltic state was announced in a statement by the head of the country's foreign ministry, as reported by NEWS.am.
The information about the convocation of a special meeting at the UN Security Council level was officially confirmed by Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže. The head of the diplomatic department posted the announcement on her page on the social network X, emphasizing the need for an urgent international response to the death of the civilian population.
The head of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the basis for holding urgent consultations at the UN Security Council was the ongoing strikes affecting civilians in Ukraine. A key factor that determined Riga's position was the attack on a facility involved in providing aid to citizens.
"Latvia has called an emergency UN Security Council meeting in response to Russian strikes on the civilian population of Ukraine, including a humanitarian aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha, where at least 26 civilians were killed," stated Baiba Braže.
The immediate reason for the Latvian side's appeal to the UN Security Council was the events that took place on November 2. On that day, the Russian army launched a massive strike on the settlement of Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine. As a result of the strike on the humanitarian aid distribution point, at least 26 people were killed.
