The session to certify the election results was suspended for several hours
A crowd of supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump breached police cordons and stormed the Capitol building in Washington, where Congress had gathered to certify the results of the presidential election.
Lawmakers and Vice President Mike Pence were evacuated. A curfew was imposed in Washington, and the National Guard was deployed to assist the police. According to police, several people died.
Several hours after the building was cleared, Congress resumed its session and certified Joe Biden's victory.
World leaders condemned the unrest. Twitter and Facebook temporarily locked Trump's accounts, citing the risk of further violence.
