Sergei Parajanov at 100: Yerevan opens the anniversary year
Exhibitions, retrospectives and new restorations of the master's films
It is 100 years since the birth of Sergei Parajanov, the director, artist and one of the most original figures of world cinema. He was born on 9 January 1924 in Tbilisi to an Armenian family.
Parajanov won worldwide fame with Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, The Color of Pomegranates, The Legend of Suram Fortress and Ashik Kerib. In the Soviet Union he was persecuted and spent several years in prison.
The Parajanov House-Museum in Yerevan, which keeps his collages, assemblages and personal belongings, has prepared a special programme for the anniversary. Retrospectives of his films are planned in a number of countries.
UNESCO has included the centenary of Parajanov in its calendar of anniversaries for 2024–2025.
