Armenia-Turkey border opens for humanitarian aid
Trucks crossed at Margara for the first time in decades
Five trucks carrying humanitarian aid for earthquake victims crossed into Turkey through the Margara checkpoint on the Armenia-Turkey border. The border between the two countries has been closed since 1993.
The convoy carried food, drinking water and medicines. The cargo was handed over to the Turkish authorities in the Adıyaman area.
Armenia's special envoy for normalisation with Turkey, Ruben Rubinyan, called the step an expression of solidarity. His Turkish counterpart Serdar Kılıç thanked Armenia for its help.
Armenian rescuers had earlier carried out search and rescue operations in Adıyaman together with Turkish colleagues. Experts believe humanitarian cooperation could give impetus to the normalisation process.
