105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide: remembrance without a march
The traditional procession to Tsitsernakaberd was cancelled because of the pandemic
Armenia and Armenian communities worldwide are marking the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. For the first time in many years, the traditional procession of tens of thousands to the Tsitsernakaberd memorial is not taking place because of coronavirus restrictions.
Flowers were laid at the eternal flame by the country's leaders: President Armen Sarkissian, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Speaker of Parliament Ararat Mirzoyan, and Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II.
In the evening, answering calls from civic initiatives, residents of Yerevan switched off their lights and lit candles on windowsills and balconies. Memorial services were held in churches across the country.
In Armenian communities in the US, France, Russia, Lebanon and other countries, commemorations moved online. Many organisations streamed prayers and lectures.
