Winter Olympics open in Milan and Cortina with five athletes for Armenia
For the first time since independence the country has a quota in pairs figure skating
The 25th Winter Olympic Games open in Italy. Competitions will take place from 6 to 22 February in Milan, Cortina d'Ampezzo and other mountain resorts in the north of the country, with about 2,900 athletes from more than 90 countries.
Armenia will be represented by five athletes: cross-country skiers Mikael Mikaelyan and Katya Galstyan, alpine skier Harutyun Harutyunyan, and the pair figure skaters Karina Akopova and Nikita Rakhmanin.
Akopova and Rakhmanin are the first in the history of independent Armenia to win an Olympic quota in pairs skating. They will also carry the national flag at the opening ceremony and be the first members of the Armenian team to compete.
The US delegation at the opening ceremony will be led by Vice President JD Vance, who will visit Armenia and Azerbaijan after the Olympics.
