The first time the Games have been delayed for a reason other than war
The International Olympic Committee and Japanese organisers have agreed to postpone the Tokyo Summer Olympics to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The decision followed a phone call between IOC President Thomas Bach and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The Games were due to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020. They will keep the name Tokyo 2020, and the Olympic flame will remain in Japan.
Canada and Australia had earlier said they would not send athletes to the Games this summer. A week ago UEFA postponed the European Football Championship to 2021.
Athletes who have already earned Olympic quotas, including Armenians, will keep them, the IOC said.
