Fighting that began on 12 July is continuing on the northern section of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, in Armenia's Tavush Province. Armenia's Defence Ministry reports attempts by Azerbaijani units to seize positions near the village of Movses.

Azerbaijan has reported the deaths of several servicemen, among them Major General Polad Hashimov. Armenia has also reported losses. Settlements in Tavush have come under fire.

It is the most serious escalation since the April 2016 war. The incident took place far from the Karabakh line of contact, on the internationally recognised border between the two states.

Russia, the United States, France and the European Union called on the sides to cease fire immediately. The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs voiced serious concern and offered to hold talks.
